When I was a kid in 2003, I had a Game Boy Color. I always loved playing Pokemon Yellow on the Game Boy Color. Since I watched the anime, my party consisted of Pokemon that Ash caught (Pikachu, Caterpie, Pidgey, Bulbasaur, Charmander, etc.). The only time I would ever catch any other Pokemon would be to put them in the Pokedex. I would catch them, and then put them in the PC and never use them again. That happened with every single Pokemon. There was one Pokemon that I did somewhat use. That Pokemon was Rattata. I caught one on route 1 near the beginning of my adventure just so I had a backup Pokemon for my Pikachu until I got the Pokemon that I wanted. I threw him at the PC afterwards and never touched it again.
Let’s skip ahead around 15 years. I was thinking about my time as a kid playing Pokemon Yellow on my Game Boy, when I suddenly got the urge to play the game once again. I lost the game not too long after beating the Elite Four.
Since my friend Greg was a big fan of video games as well, I called him and asked him if he wanted to come with me to search for Pokemon Yellow. He said that he too wanted to look for a game himself, so we agreed to meet up at my house.
After Gred arrived, we gathered up all the money we can gather and headed off, not knowing how much the games would be. I would’ve checked online. Anyway, we first stopped at GameStop, because that usually have great prices for games and are very reliable when finding games.
We stopped at the GameStop, got out of the car, and walked in. We started to search around the store, but didn’t have any luck with finding any Game Boy games. We asked the employeee that who was working at the counter at the time about the absence of Game Boy games. He told us that yesterday some kids ran into the store with trash bags, stole the entirety of the Game Boy section, and ran out off the store leaving only a note saying “HA HA”. We thought that this was extremely odd. We asked the employee if he knew where we can find a store that has Game Boy games. He told us that we can go to another GameStop or find another game store. We left GameStop to try and find another store.
After that, we left and went to another GameStop. We were about to open the door when someone opened the door. Three or four kids ran out with bags. They hopped in a car and drove off, hitting a few civilians in the process. We ran into the store to ask what had happened. The employee was crawling towards the door, gripping his gut. He told us that those kids just stole their entire supply of Game Boy games. Me and my friend looked at each other, nodded, and ran out of the store to our car. Greg tripped over the poor GameStop employee, but he recovered quickly and we ran to the car to chase after the Game Boy theives. Luckily, their van had hit a light pole and was temporarily stopped. They backed up and started driving away as we sped up to them.
We chased them for a bit. Those kids could really drive. They drifted on corners like it was nothing and drove the car off of a bridge into a highway and landed without a problem, blasting music the whole way through. We followed closely behind, even though the highway might have slowed us down, we quickly caught up once again.
Eventually, they turned into an exit so quickly that we didn’t have time to react. They had gotten away. Greg turned to me and told me that there was another GameStop not to far down that road. We turned around and went to the exit. Greg gave me directions to the GameStop, and sure enough, those kids were there. However, their van was flipped on it’s side. We pulled into the parking lot and looked at their car. One of the kids, covered in blood, broke the windshield and limped out. He was walking towards us when the car exploded, car parts and Game Boy games flying everywhere, some dead bodies visible as well. Most of them were burnt except for one which bounced off of Greg’s head and into my hands. Pokemon Yellow. The surviving kid turned around to look at the burnt wreckage of his van and fainted. Glad that we finally got Pokemon Yellow, we walked into the GameStop and bought the game Greg was looking for (Chibi-Robo! Zip Lash). We happily drove home to play our new games.
We walked into my house and up to my room. Greg pulled his 3DS from his pants and I grabbed my Gameboy from my closet. He inserted his game, and I inserted mine. We played for the next few hours until he left to go home. I went to bed at around 8:45 PM.
The next morning I made breakfast and decided to play Pokemon Yellow as I ate breakfast. I turned on the game and was greeted to the Viridian City music. Except it wasn’t playing the Viridian City music like it should have been since I am in Viridian City. All it was was a low tone that would have occasional beeps mixed in. After about 3 minutes of this, it then went silent with a soft pitter patter. As I walked through Viridian City, small black shadows started moving across the screen, so fast that I couldn’t tell what they were. NPCs started running into houses. When I tried to enter the houses, a pop up appeared saying “They locked the door”. When I tried walking in the PokeMart and the Pokemon Center, it displayed a message that said “CLOSED”. I was very confused by this, but intrigued.
After awhile I made it to the Elite Four. Across the entire game it only had the pitter patter as background music, and those shadows followed me wherever I went. Strangely enough, I almost never encountered any wild Pokemon, so the only way to get XP was through trainer battles. I thought this was weird, but thinking nothing of it, I continued to fight the Blue. It was a strange fight because the only Pokemon he had were Rattatas. He also had more than six Pokeballs. He had around six to eight. After I defeated him with ease, I entered the Hall of Fame.
Within the Hall of Fame, there was a sea of purple. Rattatas were all over the room, crawling over the dead, blood-covered body of Oak. I ran out of the room and ran past Blue, who was being eaten by his own Rattata, blood on the ground surrounding him. The Rattatas started to chase me as I ran. I ran all the way back to Pallet Town, the army of Rattatas only increasing insize with each passing town. I ran into my house and into the corner of my room. The Rattatas surrounded my as a loud crunching noise came from the Game Boy speaker. The battery light turned red and shut off after that. I turned the Game Boy over to look at the batteries. It was empty. I forgot to put batteries in the system last night, but didn’t notice because the game turned on anyway. I opened my window and chucked the Game Boy outside. It broke into pieces on impact. I looked at it for a few minute, wonder what happened. Then I saw a small purple animal walk to it.
The rat started sniffing the broken Game Boy case as it was followed by others. They were crawling from underneath porches, out of sewers, but most were coming from uncut grass from people’s lawns. I closed my window and ran downstairs to barricade my home. When I got to the door, I saw that the door was not there. There was just a gigantic hole where it was. The rattatas saw me and started flooding into my house. I managed to run out the back of my house and to my car. The Rattatas were now covering the entire neighborhood. I heard screams from everywhere, the pitter patter growing loud.
I first went to Greg’s house. His house was also surrounded by Rattatas, as was everyone else in town. I drove my car right through the front of his house and into his living room. He was sitting on his couch playing Chibi-Robo! Zip Lash. He looked at me and asked what’s up. I told him about the Rattatas, and he hopped into my car and we drove off. We looked at the news, and it told us that the Rattatas were covering three states, and they looked purple from space.
We drove to the GameStop where we got the game. We walked over to the kid who was still on the ground. He looked up at us and asked what we needed now. We started kicking the absolute crap out of him. We figured since he had the game, if we killed him it would make the Rattatas disappeared. After about ten minutes, the wave of Rattatas had reached us and nothing was solved. So we grabbed the kid, dragged him into the back seat, and drove off to the first GameStop.
We ran into the GameStop, dropped the kid near the Playstation games, and told the employee about what happened. He recognized us from yesterday, and told us that he had a solution. He reached under the counter and pulled up a flamethrower, a Game Boy, and duct tape. He taped the Game Boy onto the flamethrower, told us to get back, and stood facing the door, waiting. We heard the rumble first, and then saw the wave of purple rats. Greg pulled out a handgun from his back pocket. I brought my fists up and prepared to fight. They Rattatas started to throw themselves at the glass door, slowly breaking the glass door. The broke through, and we began to burn the rats. Most of them died from the fire, but the lucky ones who made it past the flames were either shot or punched to death.
We were in the GameStop for three days, taking shifts burning the Rattatas. After that, we saw on the news that the number of Rattatas had greatly decreased in our area, but they were still popping up across the country. We knew that we had to go out and save the world from being taken over by the Rattatas, mostly because it was my fault all of this was happening. We decided to bring the kid that stole the games along with us. He has been unconscious for the past few days, but he still has a pulse so maybe he’ll be helpful. We all got into the GameStop employee’s car, and set off on our journey to rid the world of the Rattatas...
